Radar sensors are used on vehicles to detect moving or stationary objects and designed to determine the distance of these objects over wide ranges as well as their relative speeds. Increasingly implemented in autonomous vehicles for collision avoidance, radar sensors can also be successfully deployed on mobile equipment such as forklifts, mining vehicles, or port machinery.
Positioners are essential elements of the antenna testing equipment necessary in the process of ensuring the reliability of these direction-sensing antennas before they are integrated into any autonomous device. Positioners, like other equipment in the test chamber, can be sources of error in test results. For the most accurate measurements, it is therefore crucial to keep the positioner structure out of the measurement periphery.
MVG has developed a new virtual EL/ AZ light duty positioner to support the measurement of radar sensors. Its unique virtual elevation axis enables rotation of a device under test around its phase center, keeping the mechanical support system behind the DUT as it is measured. Simultaneously, a 360° rotation in azimuth is performed and the combined movements result in a fast and accurate measurement of the radiation pattern, antenna efficiency, and polarization without interference from the positioning structure.
This light-duty virtual EL/AZ positioner is the first of the series by MVG specifically designed for direction sensing or radar sensor antennas.
